‘The thread that runs through all the things I’ve done has been justice – but everyday justice,’ says Michael King, who took over as Local Government and Ombudsman (LGO) at the beginning of this year.

Mr King began his career as a freelance journalist, and fell into public services when he was regularly writing for the North Tyneside Council newspaper. ‘I realised how fascinating local government was,’ he says.

Before long, he had trained as a weights and measures officer in trading standards in Newcastle City Council in the 1980s. ‘My career has been about listening to public concerns and doing something about them.’
