LGA mounts legal challenge over excessive credit card fees

More than 100 councils have joined a fully-funded legal challenge against MasterCard and Visa amid claims the companies unlawfully charged excessive interchange fees on transactions.

Councils believe they could be entitled to about £20m damages from the credit card giants for anti-competitive fees if the Local Government Association is successful in collectively pursuing the claim on behalf of the sector.
