Squirreling away the funds

A rather wise former boss once told me that all successful finance directors had DNA that was at least 50% squirrel.

That is, our ability to tuck away supplies ready to sustain us after times of scarce resources or in times of crisis. However, does that squirrelling instinct sometimes lead us down a path of pure risk management as opposed to risk and opportunity management?
