Diary has long lamented the decline of local newspapers and its impact on democracy.

So it was no surprise to read this week’s warning from respected former Brighton Argus editor, Mike Gilson, that declining numbers of grassroots journalists, combined with rising numbers of council PR-types, was creating an imbalance in quality news coverage.

Too many spinners, not enough sleuths.
