It is Local Government Association conference week and the sector has been eagerly anticipating James Brokenshire’s first speech to the association as secretary of state for housing, communities and local government.
It is fair to say former communities secretary Sajid Javid’s speech this time last year was somewhat less than universally well received, and relations between councils and central government have been strained for some time.
