Contractors' fears over extending council waste collection powers

Waste firms have warned of dire consequences if the Government proceeds with proposals to hand powers over collections from businesses to councils.

A range of changes to rubbish collections put out to consultation include local franchising of waste services, in which councils would issue contracts for the collection of commercial waste in a particular area, granting the operator exclusive rights to collect waste.
