The Government’s reliance on council tax increases to boost local government funding could hinder the recovery of deprived communities, a think-tank has concluded.
Some £1.9bn of the £2.2bn increase in core spending power for councils in the provisional local government finance settlement comes from tax increases of 5%, the maximum permitted without a referendum when including the social care precept.
