Cut business rates, claims Treasury's Truss

Business rates should be cut to support the private sector, chief secretary to the Treasury, Liz Truss, told a Smith Square debate last night.

As central government dries up and councils become more reliant on council tax and business rates, the minister told her local government audience: ‘Overall, it’s important we keep tax low and allow businesses to keep their money.’
