Eastern promise

The East Midlands is the region that people forget is there, says the leader of Nottingham City Council Jon Collins.

It is certainly a region traditionally overshadowed by its neighbours in the West and one that has been slower at making its devolutionary mark than the so-called ‘Northern Powerhouses’ beyond its borders.

But, as chair of East Midlands Councils, Labour’s Cllr Collins wants this to change, as well as the organisation itself.

He admits: ‘We’ve always had a challenge with regional identity. I see myself as the leader of Nottingham City Council but I also see myself as someone who doesn’t narrowly want the best just for my own city.’
