The NAO’s Matthew Wilkins looks at the housebuilding challenges ahead for the Government in the wake of the organisation’s recent overview on housing

These challenges are driven by a single inescapable fact: that housebuilding has for years failed to keep pace with demand. The Government aims to meet these challenges by building a million homes by the end of 2020 – yet its own figures suggest this number won’t be enough to fully meet need. The importance of housing in people’s everyday lives means this is a topic to which the NAO is likely to return in years to come.
