The last Labour leader to serve as a local councillor was Clement Attlee. None of his predecessors, up to and including the current leadership hopefuls, have done so.
Given Labour’s 73 councils up and down the country are now the main shop window for showing how we put our values into practice, the next Labour leader can learn a great deal from the party’s 7,127 individual councillors.
