Irene Lucas will take on the top job at Sunderland City Council for two more years, having carried out the role on an interim basis.
Ms Lucas has spent the majority of her career in Sunderland, where she first joined the council in 1977, spending 25 years in various roles in culture, leisure, public works and as assistant chief executive.
