No light at the end of the tunnel says the OBR

If you find the Brexit car crash all too depressing then why not lighten your mood with a flick through the latest analysis of the public finances from the Office for Budgetary Responsibility? Its opening paragraph gives a cheery flavour of what is to follow by stating that ‘the fiscal position is unsustainable if the public sector is on course to absorb an ever-growing share of national income simply to pay the interest on its accumulated debt.’

The Fiscal Sustainability Report examines the impact of government policies and social trends like an ageing population and immigration on the public finances both now and into the future. Indeed the biggest impact on the public finances is the ageing population. However, the announcement of extra NHS cash last month, so far unfunded, has blown a hole in projections which now show a rise in health spending all the way to 2022/23 when it reaches 7.6% of GDP or £182bn compared to £150bn now.
