Pressure on Government grows over schools grant deficits

Pressure is growing on the Department for Education (DfE) to take responsibility for growing dedicated schools grant (DSG) deficits as the number of councils reporting them rises.

The department is currently considering the results of a consultation on changing the conditions of the grant to clarify that the DSG is separate from the general funding of local authorities and that any deficit can be carried forward instead of having to be covered by general reserves.
