Preventing another tragedy

One year after a low-grade refurbishment resulted in a deadly blaze and the death of 71 people at the Grenfell Tower in London, the Government’s much anticipated independent review of building regulations and fire safety has been published. 

Chaired by Dame Judith Hackitt, the report proposes a new system to regulate work on buildings more than 10 storeys high. At its core, the review calls for greater collaboration – between local authorities, contractors, tenants and the Government – to ensure the safety of residents.

It also attempts to simplify the current regulatory system by clarifying who should be held accountable for safety failures.
