Sector shake-up will cause ‘major upheaval’

Experts fear council reorganisation could lead to an ‘incoherent and inconsistent’ model of local government, as disputes continue across the country.

Writing in The MJ this week, local government professor Steve Leach and former Local Government Information Unit chief executive Dennis Reed warned the shake-up of local authorities was leading to ‘irreconcilable’ variation across the UK.

They urged local government to ‘rise above the petty county-district power battles’ prompted by structural disputes and speak ‘with a united voice’ in protest over an ‘unacceptable’ government approach.
