Somewhat lost in last week’s grim news was a batch of public spending figures from the Office for National Statistics showing that London’s surplus to the public coffers last year was £3,070 per head.
Each Londoner generated £15,750, almost double that of the North East and Wales. Bar London, the South East and East, all English regions plus Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland had public sector fiscal deficits.
