Whitehall may step in over authorities’ commercial deals

The Government may intervene to lower the risks associated with the increased commercial activities of local authorities, it has been suggested.

A report to a meeting of the Local Government Association’s (LGA) resources board this week stressed the importance of strengthening the prudential code as councils increasingly use their borrowing powers to fund capital investment to make a commercial return.
