York City Council met with local government minister, Phil Woolas, to discuss government plans to cap the council's tax rise of 5.5%.
The council would agree a two-year expenditure profile, one of the options suggested. This could maintain the 5.5% increase for this year, and involve an increase of not more than 4.5% for 2007/08. Medway Council which also faces capping, is due to meet with Mr Woolas on 18 May.
