Bristol to launch waste company

Bristol City Council has approved plans for all its waste services to be delivered by one council-owned company.

The decision means Bristol Waste Company (BWC) will take over responsibility for waste collection and disposal for the next 10 years.

Bristol hopes the new contract will provide opportunities for dealing with the city’s waste and improve recycling rates.

Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees, said: ‘We have been given a real opportunity to make a difference to Bristol’s streets and, after considering all the facts, we believe that Bristol Waste Company offers us the best chance to achieve our ambitious goals for the city.

‘There is a lot of work to be done, but we hope that a 10-year contract will allow us the stability to make serious progress towards tidying up our streets.’

BWC will also be responsible for services including street cleansing, winter maintenance, customer engagement, waste treatment and the sale of recyclable material.
