Directors urged to keep a check on topping up of care home fees

By MJ Correspondent | 15 August 2014

Head of policy at advice charity Independent Age, Andrew Kaye, made the plea after in depth research carried out with 13 councils found local authorities were unsure about how care home top-up fees will work under the Care Act.

The research, which was published yesterday, discovered un-certainty and concern among councils about their responsibilities to monitor and manage the extent of the fees, which are paid by relatives to supplement the care of loved ones.

In an exclusive article for The MJ’s website, Mr Kaye wrote: ‘Local authorities told us they struggled to keep a handle on the families paying top-up payments for residential care – a situation they worried would get worse when the Care Act takes effect.’
