Looking forward to the next 50 years of districts

My council, Breckland, celebrated its 50th anniversary on 1 April, as did other district authorities.

This was a momentous occasion and it is a huge achievement to bring up a half-century. However, this is no time to rest on our laurels. We have pressing work to do on combating homelessness and playing our part in getting the national economy growing.

Last month’s District Councils’ Network annual conference had a theme of ‘2030 and beyond’ – an opportunity to move beyond the usual time horizons of budget and electoral cycles to consider the challenges we face and the opportunities we offer in the coming years.

Districts have a built-in superpower – we can reach the places central government cannot.
