The Hunt for cash

The Treasury has asked an internal team of experts to hunt down potential extra cash for local government, The MJ understands.

It comes as a group of 44 MPs – including former Cabinet ministers and local government secretaries – wrote to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak calling for a rethink on the settlement amid growing concerns over financial stability.

As the Treasury finalises the Local Government Finance Settlement, which is due to be published next month, the group has urged the PM to give councils a cash boost to ease pressure on services.
