Facing up to the housing challenge

Sheila Oxtoby sets out how Great Yarmouth BC is approaching the housing challenges facing much of the sector and how an understanding of housing markets is key to targeted funding.

As we start 2024, housing remains a key area of focus for us at Great Yarmouth BC. Like many councils across the country, affordable housing, our own stock and homelessness are all issues that need attention. We are attempting to address these with a range of activities we hope will mitigate the pressures and improve the quality of the stock across tenures.

One of the biggest challenges we face is around an increased need to provide temporary accommodation for homeless households. This has inadvertently led to an increase in the use of bed and breakfast housing that is not only often unsuitable but is also costly to the public purse.
