The Government could protect councils from financial collapse by underwriting the potential loss of council tax and business rates, finance chiefs have claimed.
Councils reeling from the cost of the coronavirus and are increasingly concerned that they will not be able to balance their budgets. But despite early reassurances of financial assistance, Robert Jenrick back-tracked last week and said the Government would only pay for the services it had requested.
