Fresh calls for standards code sanctions

Fresh calls for meaningful sanctions on badly behaving councillors were made this week after the Local Government Association (LGA) unanimously approved a model code of conduct.

Respondents to a consultation had pushed for the LGA to lobby for stronger penalties, including removal from office for serious or repeated breaches of the code, but this would need legislation for it to be introduced in England.
