School-leavers are dazzling employers with their IT skills, but still fail to make the grade in basic maths and English, claim business leaders. A survey by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) found half of all employers questioned were dissatisfied with the basic literacy and numeracy skills of youngsters. CBI director-general, Richard Lambert, said: ‘Young people are clearly doing some things very well. ‘The challenge ahead is for schools to channel that same enthusiasm into numeracy and literacy skills, where far too many young people are struggling.'
