LGA backs mandatory council role in migrant children scheme

Council leaders have backed a government suggestion that the national transfer scheme for unaccompanied migrant children should be compulsory for local authorities.

Currently, participation in the scheme – under which unaccompanied asylum-seeking children are taken into care by local authorities around the country – is voluntary.
