Likely rent rises are ‘ticking time bomb’

Social housing rents could rise by up to 10% next April as tenants face a battle to survive the cost of living crisis.

Under the current rules for housing providers, rent rises in April 2023 can be increased by up to the consumer price index (CPI) plus 1%.

But, with inflation soaring to 9%, there are fears about rent rises, with next year’s increase to be based on CPI as it stands in September.
