Stretched testing capacity to be scaled up

The Government's director of coronavirus testing has said lab capacity will increase 'imminently' as demand continues to rise.

Sarah-Jane Marsh said the service recognised the 'country is depending on us' and her testing team was working 18 hours a day, seven days a week.

Brand new large-scale technology to increase the number of coronavirus tests that can be processed is being introduced.

It comes amid concerns that testing centres are struggling to cope, with people sent hundreds of miles away to secure a test, and demand constraints on laboratory capacity.

On one day last week more than 50 regional test sites were reported being at 100% capacity.
