Councils are struggling to meet the housing needs of both local families on waiting lists and refugees, with flaws in the design of a flagship Government fund impacting take-up. Dan Peters reports.

Derby City Council's housing team was already at ‘full capacity' when the Government announced its new £500m Local Authority Housing Fund (LAHF) in England.

The £500m fund was designed to be used by councils to buy housing stock, build new homes, convert existing non-residential properties and refurbish dilapidated housing or empty homes into much-needed accommodation for desperate Afghan and Ukrainian families.
