Solving an age-old problem

Ten councils have already shown their commitment to older workers by becoming the first in England and Wales to sign the Age-friendly Employer pledge. Dr Emily Andrews explains.

Recent analysis by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals older workers are a significant part of the local government workforce.

In its analysis of Census 2021 data, the ONS looked at the occupations most dependent on older and younger workers and found elected members had the oldest age profile of all occupations. Just over half of people with this occupation were aged at least 60 years old, and with almost two in five (38%) aged 65 years or older.
