Tackling local government's leadership paradoxes

With many councils set for 'another set of politically volatile elections', Graeme McDonald turns to Legoland for inspiration on taking a visionary yet grounded approach to local government leadership.

On a recent trip to Legoland in Billund, Denmark – it was for the children, honest – it occurred to me just how many comparisons there are between those world-famous plastic bricks, UK local government and the way councils are run.

In different shapes and sizes, there are countless possibilities to be creative and experimental in how each piece fits together – just as innovation and imagination are key to the way councils operate. In fact, it is often the combination of very different attributes that make the most valuable impact.
