The levelling up of local government funding is long overdue

The system for funding local services is desperately in need of root and branch reform and a half-hearted fair funding review will just store up even bigger problems for the future, says Chris Tambini.

The fair funding review was first announced back in 2016 and was first a casualty of Brexit and then coronavirus.

With the announcement in the local government funding settlement, reform is back on the agenda. I think there are few who will argue that the current system manages to combine incomprehensible formulae with historic data from every decade since the 1970s and needs reform.
