Why do we bother with elections?

There are a lot of elections around at the moment. In the UK we have the local elections coming up shortly which, despite being for municipalities, counties, and districts, nonetheless have deep implications for our national politics too.

Can Boris Johnson survive as Prime Minister if he loses too many council seats? Can Keir Starmer win the next General Election if he can’t make good progress in the locals? Will the Lib Dems show that they are still a force to be reckoned with?
