Why do we bother with elections?

Forces beyond the control of the government of your country or local area will have a major role in determining what happens in your life, says Dan Corry. So why do we fight so hard for our right to cast our vote?

There are a lot of elections around at the moment. In the UK we have the local elections coming up shortly which, despite being for municipalities, counties, and districts, nonetheless have deep implications for our national politics too.

Can Boris Johnson survive as Prime Minister if he loses too many council seats? Can Keir Starmer win the next General Election if he can't make good progress in the locals? Will the Lib Dems show that they are still a force to be reckoned with?
