A seat at the table

Districts can and will bring the energy and know-how to make growth happen locally and it’s crucial they have a constituent role in all new combined authorities, says Cllr Susan Brown

The District Councils' Network believes in devolution. We believe decisions are best made closest to where people live, so they can reflect local needs. Despite frequent talk of devolution, too many places in England have been left waiting for the powers that could help transform their area.

District councils epitomise what devolution should be about. It should empower the people who understand local places and can deliver quick, tangible progress on the ground. Power should sit as close to communities as possible, where it can be harnessed for the benefit of local people and businesses. District councils are the most localised principal authorities. Local empowerment is in our DNA.
