Accelerating devolution

Local government remains enthusiastic about the English devolution revolution, but challenges lie ahead. Ann McGauran reports from a policy conference.

The Government is in a race to get devolution done in England in line with its Levelling Up White Paper promises. And with a General Election already casting its shadow, Labour leader Keir Starmer said he plans to use devolution of power to unleash untapped potential.

Sector leaders and experts gathered for a Westminster Social Policy Forum online event last week to look at the next steps for devolution. Levelling up minister Dehenna Davison started by reading the roll call of recent progress on devolution deals, which are shaping up in line with the commitments in the White Paper.
