Accountability to the public for the NHS

For the last few weeks I have been developing arguments that relate to the first two of the four listening themes that the Government set up when they had a very  belated pause for a bit of a think about their NHS reforms. I talked about choice and competition and, over Easter, blogged concerning the second group “How to ensure public accountability and patient involvement in the new system”

All of those recent posts concerned what I think is the key to the future of the NHS – much greater patient involvement in their NHS health care. I would go so far as to say that if we don’t manage to substantially increase the value that patients with long term conditions can contribute to their NHS care it will not survive into its 70th year as a universal service, free at the point of need  .
