THIRD SECTOR

Acting together on climate change

Molly Hogg explains why local authorities should collaborate with community groups to tackle climate change and highlights how the approach is being used in Cumbria.

The public sector is directly responsible for about 2% of the UK's carbon emissions, but has the power to influence about 40% of emissions through commissioning, control over development and helping communities live more sustainably. This is a huge responsibility, and the more local authorities can collaborate with others to bring these emissions down, the more effective they will be. Charities and community groups are perfect partners for this work.
