ADULT SOCIAL CARE

We need action, not a taskforce

The Levelling Up White Paper announced a taskforce into the lack of housing with care for the retired. Michael Burton argues this poorly-provided sector is another example of the dearth of policy for reducing long-term pressures on the NHS and care.

Among the more specific proposals in last month's otherwise verbose Levelling Up White Paper was the setting up of yet another cross-departmental taskforce, this time on integrated housing with care for older people.

If the Older People's Housing Taskforce ends up on another Whitehall shelf it will be a hugely lost opportunity. The UK currently provides enough housing with care units for just 0.6% of the over-65s compared to 5%-6% in Australia and New Zealand and yet evidence shows that such housing reduces hospital and GP visits and frees up homes for younger people.
