East Lothian Council is poised to launch a £1m scheme to help first time buyers obtain affordable mortgages, as local residents continue to feel the pinch from the banking credit squeeze.

The Scottish council's head of finance, David Spilsbury, presented the plan – considered the first of its kind in Scotland – to Cabinet members on 8 March.
