Time for a new age-related tax to fund social care

The finance settlement did not ward off calls to adequately fund social care. Michael Burton says it is time for the Government to bite the bullet and implement a new tax.

If the communities secretary, Sajid Javid, thought he could head off the furore over the social care deficit with his pre-Christmas £900m bung then the recent headlines over the NHS ‘humanitarian crisis' have dispelled that complacency.

Few health and care professionals believe the bung is anything more than a sticking plaster. Furthermore plundering the New Homes Bonus pot is simply shuffling money around while no one believes increasing council tax is going to plug the gap. One city unitary chief recently told me that the extra council tax earmarked for social care in his area would net just £650,000.
