Agile action on the road to reform

The whole process upon which local government funding is based, including the formula determining how resources are distributed, has to be rebuilt from scratch, argues Sir Bob Neill.

Repeated promises of reform to local government funding have heightened expectations and made the sclerotic pace of progress all the more disappointing.

As the findings of a recent report published by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) have prompted us to question again, how can we claim to have a system that is fit for purpose when it relies on such out-of-date data and, as a result, demonstrably leads to significant funding discrepancies?
