Birmingham City Council has appointed Alastair Gibbons as the new executive director of the authority's troubled children's services department.

The news comes a fortnight after it emerged previous appointee Bernadette McNally had withdrawn from the post before taking up the role.

Mr Gibbons, who will be responsible for all aspects of children's social care, is a social care veteran with three decade's experience in both children's and adult's roles.
