Local government leaders and the police have hit out at the Government for refusing to back down on directly-elected police commissioners in light of last week's riots and police hacking.

Lord Jeremy Beecham, former chairman of the Local Government Association, has called on the Government to ‘reconsider the whole proposition' of elected police commissioners.
