Everywhere you look nowadays, opinion polls. Frequently prompting orgies of gloating or anxiety, notwithstanding their psephological merit (margin of error? blip not trend? snapshot not prediction? most seem to neither understand nor care), we will all be heartily sick of them soon.

But that's not to say that they are entirely without their uses.
