Are you ready for a little scrutiny?

As the Government wrestles with how it will deliver governance of local authorities, Jack Shaw considers the take-up of the peer review process and the future of assurance.

Given the challenges facing England's local authorities, the Government has been explicit about the importance of strong governance arrangements. It is already laying the foundations.

The Government has taken action to provide certainty to councils about the auditing regime. Acknowledging systemic underinvestment in authorities – with the most disadvantaged having seen their core spending power fall by 25% – the Government plans to scrap wasteful competitive funding and give authorities longer-term certainty over their finances.
