Audit Commission chairman, Michael O'Higgins, has warned that new government audit plans are likely to leave councils facing higher costs and a lack of competition for their business.

The DCLG has set a closing date of 30 June for responses to a new consultation paper on the future of local public audit, as part of its plan to abolish the Audit Commission's role as local government watchdog.
