Prolonged austerity threatens to create a disconnected 'me-first' society unless central government offers greater support for localism and boosts community funding initiatives, a report by the New Local Government Network (NLGN) has warned.

Using a mix of trend analysis and scenario planning to understand the implications for local services by 2015, the report's authors warn society could become increasingly fragmented and reclusive following the economic downturn.
